teddy boy

Fifties British rocker

A teddy boy was a young British man of the 1950s who adopted an Edwardian-style dress—long draped jackets, narrow trousers, crepe-soled shoes—paired with American rock and roll attitudes.

The style marked working-class rebellion and was associated with gang violence.

The female equivalent was a teddy girl.

Often shortened to ted.
