flick knife

Button-release pocket blade

A flick knife is a pocketknife with a blade that springs open when a button is pressed—called a switchblade in American English.

The mechanism allows one-handed opening, which made these knives popular in mid-twentieth-century youth culture and prompted legal restrictions in many jurisdictions: He pulled a flick knife from his jacket pocket.
