tankas
Five-line stanzas
Tankas are Japanese poems of five lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5-7-7, totaling thirty-one syllables.
The form predates and encompasses haiku—the first three lines of a tanka follow haiku structure.
Tankas traditionally explore themes of nature, love, and loss: She wrote tankas about the changing seasons.
Singular: tanka.
