takedown notices
Copyright removal requests
Takedown notices are formal requests demanding removal of content from a website or platform, typically for copyright infringement or other legal violations.
The term comes from the U.S.
Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which established a process for copyright holders to notify platforms of infringing material: YouTube removed the video after receiving a takedown notice.
The system is often abused to silence criticism or remove unflattering content.
