swotting

Grinding through textbooks

Swotting is intensive studying, especially cramming before an exam.

The word is British slang, often slightly dismissive—implying rote memorization rather than genuine understanding: She spent the weekend swotting for her chemistry final.

To swot up on a subject is to study it intensively.

A swot is someone who studies excessively, roughly equivalent to American "nerd" or "grind."
