Basement water collector
A sump pit is a basin set into the floor of a basement or crawl space to collect water that seeps in through the foundation.
A sump pump sits in the pit and automatically expels accumulated water to the outside, preventing flooding: The sump pit filled during the storm, but the pump kept up.
Often shortened to sump.
