subway token
Underground rail payment
A subway token is a coin-like metal disc used as fare payment for urban rail transit.
Tokens were purchased at station booths and deposited in turnstiles for entry.
Most transit systems have replaced them with electronic cards, making tokens largely obsolete: I found an old subway token in my desk drawer.
They persist as nostalgic objects representing a city's transit history.
