subpattern

Pattern within pattern

A subpattern is a pattern contained within a larger pattern.

In programming and regular expressions, subpatterns are grouped sections that can be matched, captured, or repeated independently: The regex uses subpatterns to extract the area code and phone number separately.

More generally, any recurring element within a broader design or structure qualifies as a subpattern.
