sublayer
Beneath the surface
A sublayer is a layer within or beneath another layer—a division of a larger stratum into finer components.
The term appears in networking, where protocol layers divide into sublayers, and in geology and materials science, where distinct zones exist within broader strata.
The MAC sublayer handles network addressing.
