subcoats

Paint beneath topcoats

Subcoats are the dense, soft underlayer of fur closest to an animal's skin, beneath the longer, coarser outer guard hairs.

This insulating layer traps air and regulates body temperature.

Dogs with thick subcoats—huskies, golden retrievers—shed heavily and require regular brushing.

In painting, subcoats are primer layers applied before the finish coat.
