stumble-through

Clumsy first attempt

A stumble-through is a rough, unrehearsed run of a performance—actors walking through scenes before they've mastered blocking or lines.

The term extends to any clumsy first attempt: Let's do a stumble-through of the presentation before the client meeting.

The emphasis is on incompleteness rather than failure; stumble-throughs are expected to be messy.
