stress injury

Repetitive motion harm

A stress injury is physical damage caused by repetitive strain or overuse rather than a single traumatic event.

Stress fractures in runners' feet and carpal tunnel syndrome in office workers are classic examples.

The term also applies to psychological harm from sustained pressure: She was diagnosed with a stress injury after months of workplace harassment.

Unlike acute injuries, stress injuries develop gradually and often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.
