storm-petrel

Small storm bird

A storm-petrel is a small seabird that skims low over ocean waves, often appearing to walk on water.

The name comes from St.

Peter, who walked on the Sea of Galilee.

These dark, sparrow-sized birds were considered omens of stormy weather by sailors: Storm-petrels fluttered in the ship's wake.
