steel wheels
Train's rolling base
Steel wheels are the basic, unadorned wheels that come standard on vehicles, as opposed to aluminum alloy wheels or decorative hubcaps.
They're heavier and cheaper than alloys, often painted black and hidden under plastic covers.
Car buyers upgrading to alloy wheels sometimes describe their base model as having just steel wheels.
The term also appears in railroad contexts for traditional metal train wheels.
