stay-at-home order
Official quarantine directive
A stay-at-home order is a government directive requiring residents to remain in their homes except for essential activities like grocery shopping, medical appointments, or critical work.
Such orders became globally familiar during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, when governments used them to slow viral transmission by limiting public gatherings and movement.
The governor issued a stay-at-home order that closed bars and restaurants for indoor dining.
The term is sometimes used interchangeably with lockdown or shelter-in-place order.
