statistical correlation

Measured data linkage

Statistical correlation is a measure of how strongly two variables move together.

When one increases as the other increases, the correlation is positive; when one decreases as the other increases, it's negative.

Correlation ranges from -1 to +1, with values near zero indicating no relationship.

A common caution: correlation doesn't imply causation—ice cream sales and drowning deaths both rise in summer, but one doesn't cause the other.
