state house

Governor's official building

A state house is the building where a U.S. state legislature meets and conducts official business.

The term is sometimes written as one word, statehouse.

These buildings typically serve as the seat of state government and often house the governor's office as well.

We took a school trip to the state house in Albany.

In some regions, particularly New Zealand and parts of the former British Empire, state house refers instead to government-provided public housing.
