star drive
Interstellar engine system
A star drive is a hypothetical propulsion system capable of moving spacecraft across interstellar distances at speeds approaching or exceeding light.
The term belongs almost exclusively to science fiction, where it serves as a plot device enabling travel between star systems within practical timeframes.
Various fictional universes have their own versions—warp drives, hyperdrives, jump drives—but star drive functions as a generic term covering any such technology.
The colony ship's star drive failed three light-years from their destination.
