standby power

Backup energy source

Standby power is the electricity consumed by devices when they're switched off but still plugged in—the trickle that keeps clocks running, remotes responsive, and instant-on features ready.

Also called phantom power or vampire power: Unplugging chargers reduces standby power waste.

In a different sense, standby power refers to backup generators or reserve electrical capacity ready to activate when needed.
