stalemating

Forcing a draw

Stalemating is bringing a situation to a standstill where neither side can win or advance.

The word comes from chess, where a stalemate occurs when a player cannot make a legal move but isn't in check—a draw by paralysis rather than defeat.

Beyond chess, it describes deliberately creating deadlock: The filibuster succeeded in stalemating the bill.
