spring coil

Wound metal tension

A spring coil is a helical piece of metal or wire that stores mechanical energy when compressed, stretched, or twisted, then releases it to return to its original shape.

The term is slightly redundant—most springs are coiled by nature—but emphasizes the spiral structure: The spring coil in the mattress had worn through the fabric.

Found in everything from pens to car suspensions.
