spit valve
Trumpet moisture release
A spit valve is a small valve on a brass instrument that allows accumulated moisture to be drained.
Despite the name, the liquid is mostly condensation from the player's breath, not actual saliva.
Players open the valve periodically during performance to clear the instrument: He emptied his spit valve between movements.
