spirographs

Gear-driven drawing toys

Spirographs are geometric drawing toys that use interlocking plastic gears and toothed rings to create intricate curved patterns called hypotrochoids and epitrochoids.

A pen inserted through holes in a smaller gear traces elaborate symmetrical designs as it rolls inside or around a larger ring: We spent hours making spirograph patterns as kids.

The term also refers to the designs themselves or to medical devices that measure breathing capacity.
