special military operation
War by another
Special military operation is a euphemism for war, most notably Russia's term for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The phrase avoids the word "war" to downplay the scale of conflict, evade legal consequences, or control domestic narrative.
In Russia, calling the invasion a war became criminally punishable.
The term has become darkly ironic shorthand for state propaganda reframing aggression: It's not a war, it's a "special military operation".
