solarization

Sun-bleached film effect

Solarization is a photographic effect where extreme overexposure reverses tones—bright areas become dark, dark areas become light.

The technique produces dreamlike, ethereal images with distinctive halos around edges.

In photography and image editing, solarization is sometimes applied deliberately for artistic effect: The portrait had that classic solarized look, with glowing outlines around the figure.

In agriculture, soil solarization is a different process: covering ground with plastic sheeting to trap heat and kill weeds, pathogens, and pests.
