sodium carbonate

Glass-making alkali ingredient

Sodium carbonate is a white powder used in glassmaking, water softening, and cleaning products.

Also called soda ash or washing soda, it's a basic (alkaline) compound that cuts grease and removes stains: Add sodium carbonate to the laundry for stubborn stains.

Not to be confused with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is milder.
