social self

Presented group identity

The social self is the version of oneself presented to and shaped by others—the identity that emerges through interaction, as distinct from private thoughts or introspection.

The concept acknowledges that who we are depends partly on social context: Her social self at work differed markedly from who she was at home.

The term appears in psychology and sociology, where theorists argue the self is fundamentally constructed through relationships and social feedback.
