snow fences
Winter drift controllers
Snow fences are barriers erected to control drifting snow, typically slatted wooden or plastic structures placed along roads, railways, or fields.
They work by slowing wind and causing snow to accumulate on the lee side of the fence rather than across the area being protected: The highway department installs snow fences each November.
