shelter belt

Protective tree row

A shelter belt is a row or rows of trees or shrubs planted to protect an area from wind, reduce soil erosion, or provide cover for wildlife.

Common on farms and prairies, they shield crops, buildings, and livestock from harsh weather: The shelter belt blocked the worst of the winter winds.

Also called a windbreak.
