snipes

Fires from concealment

Snipes is the plural of snipe, a wading bird with a long bill that probes mud for food.

Snipe hunting is notoriously difficult—the birds flush unpredictably—which spawned the prank of sending gullible newcomers on a futile snipe hunt.

The verb snipe means to shoot from a concealed position, or to make cutting remarks: They sniped at each other throughout the meeting.
