snipe hunt
Prank wilderness chase
A snipe hunt is a prank in which experienced members of a group send a newcomer on a futile search for an imaginary or unobtainable quarry.
The classic version involves sending someone into the woods at night to catch a "snipe" using absurd methods.
By extension, any fool's errand or wild goose chase: The intern finally realized the assignment was just a snipe hunt.
