single-party state

Monopolized political system

A single-party state is a country where only one political party holds power, either by law or through suppression of opposition.

Other parties may be banned outright or exist in name only without genuine electoral competition.

China and Cuba are single-party states.

The term often carries connotations of authoritarianism, though some such governments claim popular legitimacy.
