side saddle
Not astride, historically
Side saddle describes a way of sitting on a horse with both legs on the same side rather than straddling the animal.
The position was traditionally required of women wearing skirts or dresses.
A side saddle is also the specialized saddle designed for this riding style, with a horn to hook the leg around.
The term extends to any sideways seating position: She sat side saddle on the edge of the bed.
