side netting
Net's lateral portion
Side netting is the part of a goal net closest to the goalpost, as distinct from the back of the net.
In soccer commentary, putting the ball in the side netting emphasizes the precision of a shot placed just inside the post—too far for the goalkeeper to reach, too accurate to miss wide.
