fingertip save
Barely deflected shot
A fingertip save is a goalkeeper's desperate deflection of a shot using only the tips of the fingers, typically at full stretch.
The term appears in soccer, hockey, and other goal sports to describe saves where the keeper barely reaches the ball: What a fingertip save to deny the header!
The phrase emphasizes how close the shot came to going in.
