side line
Bench an athlete
A side line is a boundary marking the edge of a playing field, or the area just beyond it where coaches and substitutes stand.
Figuratively, to be on the sidelines is to observe without participating: She watched from the sidelines as the debate unfolded.
To sideline someone is to remove them from active involvement, often due to injury or circumstance: A knee injury sidelined him for the season.
Usually written as one word: sideline.
