ship horn
Harbor warning blast
A ship horn is the loud, low-pitched warning device mounted on boats and ships, used to signal position in fog, announce departure, or communicate with other vessels.
The deep, resonant blast carries across water and is distinct from higher-pitched vehicle horns: We heard the ship horn through the fog.
Also called a foghorn when used specifically for navigational warnings.
