sharecrops
Farms for portion
Sharecrops is the verb form of sharecrop, describing the agricultural practice where a tenant farmer works land owned by someone else in exchange for a share of the crops produced rather than paying cash rent.
The arrangement was especially common in the American South after the Civil War, where formerly enslaved people and poor white farmers worked land owned by others.
He sharecrops forty acres of cotton for a local landowner.
The system often kept farmers in cycles of debt and poverty.
