Southern history
Antebellum scholarship field
Southern history refers to the study or narrative of the American South, particularly the antebellum period, Civil War, and Reconstruction.
The phrase often signals a focus on the Confederacy and its legacy—sometimes euphemistically, as when defenders of Confederate monuments invoke Southern history and heritage.
The term can be neutral in academic contexts but frequently appears in debates over how slavery, segregation, and racial violence should be remembered and taught.
