Punch thin air
A shadow box is a shallow display case with a glass front, used to exhibit and protect three-dimensional objects—medals, memorabilia, dried flowers, or keepsakes: She mounted her grandfather's war medals in a shadow box.
To shadow box (or shadowbox) is to spar with an imaginary opponent, throwing punches at the air as training exercise.
Figuratively, shadow boxing describes fighting something intangible or going through the motions of conflict without real engagement: The candidates spent the debate shadow boxing rather than addressing the issues.
