settlement offer
Terms to resolve
A settlement offer is a proposal to resolve a legal dispute without going to trial, typically involving payment or other terms in exchange for dropping the claim.
Either party may make one: Their lawyer came back with a settlement offer of $50,000.
Accepting ends the case; rejecting it means litigation continues.
Settlement offers are often made "without prejudice," meaning they can't be used as evidence if the case proceeds to trial.
