serenata

Secular vocal work

A serenata is a musical composition for voices and instruments, typically performed outdoors in the evening.

The form flourished in the Baroque era as a celebratory work for special occasions—weddings, birthdays, or diplomatic events.

Less dramatic than opera but more elaborate than a cantata, serenatas often featured mythological characters offering praise to a patron or honoree.
