self-induction

Coil resists current change

Self-induction is the phenomenon where a changing electric current in a conductor creates a magnetic field that induces a voltage opposing the change in that same conductor.

This property, measured in henrys, causes circuits to resist sudden changes in current flow.

Coils designed to exploit this effect are called inductors or chokes: The self-induction of the coil smooths out voltage spikes.
