self-differentiation
Developing separate identity
Self-differentiation is the capacity to maintain your own identity, values, and emotional stability while remaining connected to others—especially in close relationships or group settings.
The concept comes from family systems therapy, where it describes the ability to think independently without being overwhelmed by others' emotions or pressure to conform.
A well-differentiated person can disagree without becoming defensive or cutting off: Her self-differentiation allowed her to stay close to her family without adopting their political views.
In biology, the term refers to cells or tissues developing distinct characteristics on their own.
