sea-squirt

Sessile marine filter-feeder

A sea-squirt is a sac-shaped marine invertebrate that attaches to rocks, shells, or other underwater surfaces.

It feeds by drawing water through one opening and expelling it through another—the squirting action giving the animal its name.

Despite their blob-like adult form, sea-squirts are surprisingly close relatives of vertebrates, sharing a common ancestor with fish and humans.
