screwball comedies
Madcap romantic films
Screwball comedies are a style of romantic comedy film from Hollywood's golden age, roughly the 1930s and 1940s, featuring fast-paced dialogue, farcical situations, and battle-of-the-sexes plots between mismatched couples.
Class differences often figure prominently—wealthy heiresses paired with working-class men, or vice versa.
The genre emphasized witty banter and physical comedy over sentiment: Bringing Up Heiress and His Girl Friday are classic screwball comedies.
