scrapie

Fatal ovine encephalopathy

Scrapie is a fatal degenerative disease affecting the nervous systems of sheep and goats.

Infected animals scrape against fences and other objects, hence the name.

The disease belongs to a class of conditions caused by prions—misfolded proteins that trigger progressive brain damage.

Scrapie was the first recognized transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, related to mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
