school gardens
Educational growing spaces
School gardens are outdoor growing spaces maintained by students as part of educational programming.
They serve multiple purposes: teaching biology, ecology, and nutrition; providing hands-on experience with planting and harvesting; and sometimes supplying produce for school cafeterias.
The school garden produced enough tomatoes to serve at lunch.
The concept dates to early progressive education movements but has seen revival amid concerns about childhood nutrition and environmental awareness.
