sawdust floors

Sawdust floors are floors covered with a layer of sawdust, traditionally found in butcher shops, bars, and working-class establishments.

The sawdust absorbed spills, blood, and tracked-in mud, making cleanup easier—you'd simply sweep it out and spread fresh.

A place with sawdust floors suggests old-fashioned, unpretentious, or rough-edged character: a sawdust-floor tavern where longshoremen drank after shifts.
