barrel house
Cheap drinking establishment
A barrel house is a rough, cheap drinking establishment, originally one where liquor was served directly from barrels.
The term evokes rowdy, working-class saloons of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Barrelhouse also names a style of early jazz piano characterized by a driving, percussive beat suited to such venues: He played that old barrelhouse blues.
